Remedial education costs students approximately $1.3 billion every year, says a report from the Center for American Progress. Yet many students who enroll in remedial courses do not receive college credit and are less likely to graduate, the report says. The study offers several recommendations, including retaining or adopting the Common Core State Standards and stronger collaboration between higher education and K-12 systems to create consensus around a definition of remedial education, placement practices, and structures for remedial education in public higher education institutions.
